Sustainability in beverage logistics: options to help lower your CO₂e emissions in transport

What sustainability means for your beverage supply chain

Sustainability in beverage logistics is about how your wine, beer or spirits move through the supply chain and the choices that can influence emissions, efficiency and compliance. For importers, producers and distributors, this sits alongside decisions such as route planning, transport mode, inventory positioning and lead times. The challenge is balancing these factors while maintaining product quality and cost predictability

Why sustainability matters in beverage logistics today

Regulation, customer expectations and cost pressures are evolving across global markets. Emissions reporting is becoming more detailed, while customers expect greater transparency on how products are transported. This creates practical questions around how to reduce transport-related emissions, maintain lead times and report data consistently. These are operational decisions that directly impact supply chain performance.

How we help identify options to reduce CO₂e in beverage transport

We look at your full supply chain to identify adjustments that may reduce CO₂e emissions relative to your existing routing or modal setup while maintaining performance. This can include selecting transport options based on distance and transit time, consolidating shipments to consolidating shipments to support improved container utilisation or positioning stock closer to the point of sale on selected routes. We can also support the allocation of alternative fuels within the logistics network using a book & claim methodology depending on your trade lanes and volumes.

GoGreen Plus: applying alternative fuels via a book & claim system

GoGreen Plus* is a value added service that allocates alternative fuels and technologies within the logistics network through a book & claim system. This is implemented using a book and claim approach, meaning the emission reduction is achieved within the network and allocated to your transport activity, but it does not necessarily mean the specific shipment is transported using those fuels. For sea freight, this can include the use of marine fuels with lower lifecycle CO₂e emissions compared to conventional fossil fuels. The impact is calculated by comparing lifecycle CO₂e emissions of allocated alternative fuels to those of conventional fossil fuels, without changing your physical transport flow or lead times.

Measuring and reporting transport emissions

Having access to consistent data is key when making transport decisions. We can support you with emissions reporting based on your transport activity, providing visibility across transport mode, route and estimated CO₂e emissions. This allows you to track estimated performance over time, support internal reporting requirements and share data with customers and partners, helping you monitor CO₂e estimates and changes over time.

When to consider different transport approaches

There is no single approach that fits every shipment. The right choice depends on your priorities, including lead time, volume, market requirements and product characteristics. Faster transport can reduce transit time but may increase emissions, while consolidation or alternative routing can support efficiency on selected trade lanes. A structured view of your supply chain helps you balance cost, service and emissions with more clarity.

How we can support your business

You already manage a complex supply chain. Our role is to make the transport side easier to plan and manage. We work with you to review your current setup and identify where operational adjustments may help reduce CO₂e emissions and align transport decisions with your operational priorities. With the right visibility and planning, you can make informed decisions across your wine, beer and spirits supply chain.

* GoGreen Plus is a value-added service to a DHL shipment contributing to decarbonization measures within DHL’s logistics network. By using alternative fuels and/or technologies DHL reduces the usage of fossil fuels in the mode of transport used for the GoGreen Plus shipment. This does not necessarily mean that the specific shipment is physically transported with the assets using these fuels or technologies. Further information, e.g. on concrete decarbonization measures is available
